Connected Vehicle Pilot

ITS Roads leads systems engineering design for a Connected Vehicle Operational Environment.

The Client

The client is a fast-growing public agency working to future-proof their transportation network and infrastructure.

The Challenge

Traditional traffic engineering relies on Civil Engineering and Urban Planning expertise, but modern systems require heavy data integration and advanced network security. New connected vehicle and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications require both communication infrastructure deployment and backend data integration without disrupting existing operations or introducing new security or safety risks.

The Solution

ITS Roads led the preliminary Systems Engineering design for a Connected Vehicle Operational Environment (CVOE) to establish a robust platform for backend data integration and gradual roll-out of new hardware. The CVOE is a modular, scalable, and future-proof system that aligns with current systems to maximize the benefit of new applications and minimize the backend burden. ITS Roads conducted a thorough analysis of the existing architecture and data flows to ensure that the CVOE design safeguarded all current systems. Using a “bottom-up” approach, the CVOE creates a strong foundation that will support continuous growth to incorporate new applications and technology and keep pace with massive growth.

Data Visualization

As part of this project, ITS Roads conducted a cellular signal strength and coverage survey of a main highway corridor connecting downtown to local resorts and tourist destinations. Combining video, GPS, and radio frequency collection instruments, a video was produced to help visualize the data.
